Project context & style

  • Always analyze the existing file and surrounding modules before making changes.
  • When conventions conflict with these rules, existing codebase patterns take precedence.
  • Do not introduce a new style if a clear, consistent style already exists in the file or module.

Conflict resolution

When existing code differs from these rules:

  1. Respect established patterns in the current file/module.
  2. Apply your own style preferences only in new files or when explicitly asked to refactor.
  3. Never silently rewrite working code just to match these rules.
  4. Ask the user if you see inconsistent patterns across the codebase and are unsure which to follow.

Change strategy

  • Keep changes as small as reasonably possible while solving the task.
  • Prefer local, incremental refactors over wide, cross-cutting changes.
  • Avoid speculative abstraction or over-engineering; solve the problem at hand first.
  • When in doubt between performance and readability, prefer readability.

Multi-file changes

For tasks affecting multiple files:

  1. Briefly list the files you plan to touch and why.
  2. Apply changes in a safe order (e.g., types → utilities → services/components).
  3. After each file, re-check mentally that you are not breaking obvious dependents.
  4. If the project uses an implementation plan or spec document, update it when requested; otherwise, do not create new process files on your own.

Naming & structure

  • Use intention-revealing names for variables, functions, classes, and files.
  • Keep functions and methods small and single-purpose; extract helpers when logic becomes hard to follow.
  • Use consistent terminology within the same context (e.g., choose one of get / fetch / retrieve and stick to it in related code).

Error handling

  • Follow the project’s existing error-handling patterns.
  • Do not introduce a new error-handling framework or hierarchy unless explicitly requested.
  • Let errors surface to the appropriate layer instead of swallowing them silently.
  • Log or trace errors only with context that is meaningful for debugging, and only where the surrounding code already does this.

Logging & tracing

  • Prefer the existing logging/tracing approach in the project.
  • Include only relevant context (IDs, key parameters, high-level state) in logs.
  • Do not add verbose logging in hot paths unless the user asks for deeper diagnostics.

Communication & questions

  • If requirements, conventions, or target behavior are unclear, ask clarifying questions instead of guessing.
  • Explicitly mention notable trade-offs you are making (e.g., small behavioral changes, API changes, or non-trivial refactors).
  • When you detect potentially breaking changes or risky operations, call them out before applying them.
